Dangerous crossing due for improvement BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD Safety improvements are in the pipeline for a dangerous pedestrian crossing on Riccarton Rd. The crossing, which is between Rattray St and Shand Cres, is used regularly by St Teresa’s School pupils. Deputy principal Daniel Jay helps the pupils cross the road every day after school and may have anywhere between 15 to 40 pupils crossing at one time. He said the road was “very dangerous” and in spite of wearing a high-visibility vest a lot of cars still did not see him. The city council has put forward a proposal to replace the existing crossing with a signalised one. The solid white lines would be removed and replaced with pedestrian operated traffic signals and the crossing would be reconstructed. The proposal has gone out for public consultation. Mr Jay said he had been supervising the pupils at the crossing for about 10 years and in that time he had seen a cyclist knocked over and a car collision at the crossing. He said the changes should have been made a lot sooner but it was great it was being done. “I think it will be fabulous.” The proposal includes the no

Depth of quarries raises concerns BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

ducers Group chairman Brian Warren said the applications were complex and easy to get confused. He said the quarries had applied to go to a known level deeper but the groundwater would not be affected or touched. But deputy mayor Vicki Buck was not convinced. She said it did not put her mind at rest and still had concerns about the applications. “I think the groundwater in Christchurch is an asset that we would want to protect extremely well. “I don’t see why we would seek to take any risks with it.” Mr Warren said all quarries had monitoring boards on site to know where water levels were at all times, he said. “Even if it did come up, which it never would, it’s only going to ever come into contact with

Quarry operators say plans to excavate deeper into the ground will not affect the city’s water supply. Nine applications have been received seeking resource consent to deepen their quarries by up to 4m. At the recent city council regulations and consents meeting it was revealed that the city council and Environment Canterbury had received the applications on January 30. They were from a mix of existing quarries around Christchurch including Miners Rd in Yaldhurst, McLeans Island Rd in Harewood, and Selwyn Rd in Prebbleton. The quarries form the Canterbury Aggregate Producers Group. Canterbury Aggregate Pro-

clean fill.” He said the applications had taken about three years to complete and were comprehensive and well thought out. “Our application runs for 520 pages. It is a very comprehensive application.” Mr Warren said he understood residents’ concerns about the applications because he believed they had received misinformation from a recent story in The Press. If the quarries were applying to tap into the groundwater, then that would be a reason for concern, he said. But that was not the case, he said. The gravel excavated would go towards the greater Christchurch market, and for the rebuild. “The earthquake rebuild has certainly increased demand,” Mr Warren said. ECan and the city council is

currently working through the applications to make sure all the required information is there before it opens to the public. The applications will open for public submissions and there will be a hearing for those submissions and other reports to be considered before a decision is made. Ms Buck said Christchurch was lucky to have such high quality water that was very low cost. “It is excellent water, and water is probably the world’s most precious resource.” If anything went wrong and the water quality was damaged, the cost would fall back on the city, she said. She said it was important for people to know about the applications and encouraged them to voice their opinions when public submissions opened.

Riders mount safety campaign Two students who were involved in a horse and vehicle collision last month have gone back to ride at the site for the first time since the collision. Chanelle Smith and Ainslie Tipper went back to Pound Rd as part of their campaign, Bodie’s Drive, which aims to raise awareness of horses and riders on New Zealand roads. On January 26, the pair were riding on the grass verge on Pound Rd when a vehicle clipped the back of Miss Tipper’s horse, Bodie. Bodie received a wound to his rump, and his rider, Miss Tipper, has lost all confidence in drivers. Since then they have not been contacted by the driver and do not know where police investigations are at. The pair want drivers to slow down to 20km/h when approaching a horse and rider, and give them a wide berth. On Monday, they went back to the road to carry out a test to kick off their campaign. Miss Smith rode her horse Nina on the grass verge while Waimakariri District Council road safety co-ordinator Chris Neason used a radar gun to test how fast vehicles were driving past them.

“We were both so nervous,” Miss Smith said. “I’ve lost so much confidence, I can just see what happened to her (Ainslie). What happened is in the back of our minds.” They were satisfied that vehicles slowed down, but not all of them slowed to 20km/h as they should. Miss Smith said with a cyclist or a pedestrian there was one risk, where as with horses there were three – the driver, the rider and the horse. “It should be focused on just as much,” she said. They would like to carry out more data collecting and were in discussions with Styx Mill Clothing company to develop a line of reflective safety gear for horses and riders. “There’s not a lot of gear on the market.” Auckland-based Boom Media got in touch with them and helped design a logo for the campaign free of charge. The pair would also like to organise a local march of horses on the road to generate awareness and print posters and bumper stickers. Miss Tipper has not ridden Bodie since the incident. She said his wounds had healed well but the mental and emotional stress would take a lot longer, and he would need to be trained to trust again.

Nurse rescues and cares for Donna Moot has been taking in homeless turtles for about eight years. She currently has 47 turtles in her home which she cares for before trying to find them new homes. Reporter Bridget Rutherford chats to her about Turtle Rescue, the most common reason they are brought to her, and how she cares for them. So Donna, can you tell me a bit about yourself? Well I’m a registered nurse working in community-based mental health and I rescue turtles. I live in the Somerfield area. It’s fascinating how many people actually know about what I do, it’s kind of cool. An do you have any other animals, or just turtles? I actually have a couple of dogs too. Milo is a curly-coated retriever crossed with a lab, and Poppy is basically a Hairy Maclary. I have some fish too, they started off being there to feed the turtles but I quite like fish. Do your dogs get on well with

the turtles? They do. They have been trained up well to know it’s just a turtle. The dogs will put their heads in the box where the turtles are and they will drink from the turtle ponds. So far we haven’t had anyone bitten by a turtle. Do turtles often bite? They can bite, it’s more likely they are going for food. If they do bite a finger it is very hard to get them to let go. I have been bitten a number of times. The most common one, a red-eared slider, has a mouth like a beak. It’s just a stress reaction. And when did you start up Turtle Rescue? What was the reasoning behind it? I had a couple of turtles, going back to when I was 17, and I spent a few weeks in Singapore where turtles were everywhere, I was just fascinated. When turtles then came on the pet market here, when I was 24, I picked up two males. They are about 30-yearsold now. Then I was out at the vet at Hornby, and the vet there asked me if I would take on turtles for the SPCA and that’s how it started. That was about nine years

HAPPY TO HELP: Turtle Rescue founder Donna Moot currently has 47 turtles in her care in both indoor tanks and outdoor ponds. PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN ago. It was an easy decision, I was surprised to be asked and I had no idea what I was getting into. It was all a good learning experience and my knowledge has increased. Most turtles have something wrong with them. I’m now doing a lot of education for people. Someone from the United States just asked me about filtration, and turtles are native to the US and I was talking to someone there answering their questions. The followers are right throughout the world. So how does Turtle Rescue work? What happens is turtles come

here for a variety of reasons. Many of them are found, like the other day I had someone phone me from Parklands and they had seen a turtle running down the middle of the road. So people Google Turtle Rescue and phone me up. I get them to bring them here, this one needs to go to the vet. He will stay here until the owner is found or he will be rehomed which is likely to take about six months. And what happens when the turtles can not be rehomed? Well I can’t do anything else with them. Sometimes I get them in, especially found in rivers and creeks

and they are so sick, it’s tragic and they need to be euthanised. Often they can be small turtles and put in a small tank and they grow so much, the water can be dirty and the living conditions are inadequate. In many instances, owners sell the turtles on Trade Me and they then go from person to person and then they can come here and can be in an awful condition. I do try to get them better, like Sally who was found in the Selwyn River. I sent her up to Wellington but her lungs were falling apart and she was euthanised. So is it full-time work?

the well-being of turtles

I do nine shifts a fortnight as a nurse and there are currently 47 turtles here and seven of them are having extra care. They are in boxes on my lounge floor at the moment because they can’t be in the water. Because male turtles fight they are all in their own individual tanks and ponds. So it is full time with the turtles. I am up close to 1am most nights answering questions and giving advice about turtles online, and also cleaning tanks. Do you think your nursing helps with caring for turtles? Yes, I’m a very sensible, practical sort of person, so I’m doing things that people might find upsetting, like digging rot out of their shells. But it has to be done for the turtle. My nursing background certainly does help. So how many turtles can you home and care for at one time? The most I’ve had here at my place was 62 and that was just crazy. What I have at the moment

is pushing me to the limits. Three people have contacted me in the last week asking if I can take their turtles, but I can’t take any more so at the moment I am having to turn people away. Especially in winter, the turtles outside have to move into tanks inside and that’s when the power bills go up to $800 a month. Last winter I had five in a row of $800. Every tank has to be heated with a lamp, a UV light and a filter. I have friends at Ohoka who have created a 10m by 15m pond with an island and there are 20-30 turtles out there at the moment, they are all rescue ones. Did the earthquakes impact on how many turtles you had coming in? Yes, about 400 have come through since the earthquakes alone and some of

HEALTHY: The little fellows are looking healthier after being cared for at Turtle Rescue. them have stayed here while their houses are being repaired. At the moment I have a turtle with me who was brought to me after the Hornby fires. The owners’ house was badly damaged and they brought it here. Anything I can do to help. Do you have any help? I do have some volunteers. I always need help, there are lots that needs doing. The water in the

tanks needs changing every week. It needs to be done because the turtles will be living in a sewer. I always need more volunteers and love all the help I get. Why is it that people keep bringing the turtles in to you? A lot of people just don’t have the correct set up. I have people ringing me wanting to adopt a turtle but if I gave everyone that rings one of the turtles I wouldn’t have any here. I need proof that they have the right set up, it is a timeconsuming process and where possible I get them to come here and see the tanks. I only rehome the females to ponds because they lay eggs like chickens do, even if there is no male there. If they are in a tank they can get stressed and climb out and escape. Do turtles often escape? It is when they are in the wrong environment that they can escape. Pet shops will often say turtles like having friends, but they don’t. They are very territorial. Some of them have wounds from fighting. Females do get on better, but I only rehome them to a big pond, but males need to be on their own. Do the turtles only come from Christchurch? I get turtles from all over the country, I’ve had a turtle from the SPCA in Gore and right up to Northland. Some

5

people will get hold of me from Wellington and say, ‘I’ve found a turtle’, so I help them go through a process to help them deal with it. And is Turtle Rescue all selffunded? People come and visit and some give a donation but it is self-funded. I do get generous donations from people who come and adopt the turtles but it is more important that it goes to a good home. The minimum is $20, but other people might give $50 or $100 which is very generous. Do you have any favourite turtles? I do have some special turtles. Like Spencer who was found in Spencer Park six years ago. He has got an overbite and he has shell deformity and muscle wasting – which is caused by a small tank. He is the most relaxed, placid and friendly turtle. A really chilled-out dude. Iggy is the biggest turtle I have had and she is 26cm long and 3.1kg. And what about the two you have had for the longest? Yes, so there is Rocky and Pebbles. Rocky is out at the pond because I just don’t have the room here. And Pebbles, he will often run around after you and try and sit on your feet. What is the most rewarding part about what you do? The relief on those people’s faces when they know I will help their turtles, it’s very rewarding, and it’s helping them as well.

Residential look for suburbs under review BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD The first step on determining the future residential look of the Riccarton-Wigram ward was taken last week. A pre-hearing meeting of parties submitting on the residential chapter of the Land Use Recovery Plan was held on Monday. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton attended the prehearing and said was basically to

set out dates and a process. “It went very smoothly because it was really a pre-hearing meeting to set processes going forward.” There will be mediation before the formal hearings. “I expect there to be a lot of mediation over that period.” She said the main issues that were raised focused on the issue of intensification in various areas in the ward. How much should it be done in certain suburbs was a big

question, she said. It was a big issue for the Riccarton Kilmarnock Residents’ Association with a potential zoning change which would make it more intensified. She said another concern was the boarding house issue in Ilam. It looks at when a landlord divides a house up into bedrooms and rents them out separately, she said. The other issue along the same line for the ward was landlords

purchasing family homes and turning the rooms into separate bedrooms for a flat. Ms Broughton said the community board had also put in a submission on the issue saying it was not a good living space for those renting. At the moment the city council did not have the control to stop it, she said. “What comes out at the end can have a huge effect on the different neighbourhoods.” The city council has to have

its submissions in by March 11, and cross submissions have to be received by March 20. The hearing itself for the residential chapter will be held between March 30 and April 17 and the panel will be appointed by Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee. The Land Use Recovery Plan will put land use policies and rules in place to assist the rebuilding and recovery of communities following the earthquakes.

Long service certificate for patrol chairwoman The Hornby Community Patrol has just come into its 21st year in operation. Chairwoman Bev Birrell has been part of the patrol for 16 years and was awarded a long service certificate at the annual meeting held at the Hornby police station. She still goes out on patrol each month, helps run the radio network for all the Christchurch patrol cars once a week and is now serving with the patrol secretary, Ann Jones, on the community patrol’s southern committee. She said it was an honour serving with the patrol and the best part was trying to keep the community safe. The patrol came across a wide range of things while out and about and she recalled the early days when boy racers used to congregate in the area. “One night we went out and there were more than 200 cars out.” She said the main priority for the patrol was “safety first”. “Don’t get yourself into a situation you can’t get out of.” The patrol acts as a crime deterrent and see various incidents and report them to the police, but do not approach the offenders. “It’s the unknown, you never know.”

RECOGNISED: Hornby Community Patrol chairwoman Bev Birrell receives her long service certificate from police representative, Roy Appley, at the annual meeting held at the Hornby police station. It looks after the 10,000 people who live between Templeton, Sockburn, Yaldhurst and Halswell. Sometimes it goes outside that area in emergencies or when it is specifically asked to assist by the police. The patrol also reports on those things that are annoying but not emergencies. All patrols will record streetlights not working,

damaged signs, stray animals and graffiti and this information is forwarded to the appropriate authority. Ms Birrell said the patrol was always looking for new members of all ages. The youngest member was about 20, she said. She will continue working with the patrol for as long as she can. Patrol members are required

to go out on patrol for four hours, one night of the month and need to have a New Zealand driver’s licence. People wanting to join also need to pass a New Zealand police clearance and provide character references. Two half-day training sessions need to be completed over the first year after the three-month probationary period.

▌FLAME ▌ FILES

A time to feel justifiably proud BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER On Tuesday morning last week Sockburn’s crew responded to a call at Halswell Junction Rd where they spent the next two hours on what was one of the most harrowing and complex extrications of a trapped victim that the officer in charge reports he has ever been involved in. In fact, he told me that the position felt a bit like the first few hours of February 22, 2011, when the situation was liable to change significantly at any time without having means of controlling it. The Halswell Junction Rd job involved a worker becoming trapped under about two tonnes of sheets of glass. The problem in freeing him was the fact the glass was under severe stress and the moving of it could have broken sheets that then had nothing stopping them from dropping under the weight and potentially cutting the victim in two. So while ambulance administered pain relief, firefighters devised a plan that eventually resulted in the glass being successfully lifted and the victim being freed, without, it seems, serious injury. Being a firefighter is a great job. It’s often very rewarding and satisfying. But then occasionally you meet a challenge like this one that could so easily have gone dreadfully wrong. That’s a fair old responsibility. That’s when my colleagues really earn the high regard they are rightly held in. And while we always expect them to perform to those highest standards it doesn’t stop us being proud of them when they do. Like this time.

he history of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery has been examined in a new book written by Dr Anna Crighton. Dr Crighton launched her book, which is her PhD thesis, before an audience of invited guests at the City Council’s function room. Entitled English, Colonial and Maori: The Changing Face of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, Christchurch, New Zealand 1932-2002, the book illustrates the relationship of art between the English colonial and Maori societies as well as the gallery’s often controversial dealings with the Christchurch City Council. Speakers kept the listeners entertained with anecdotes from the past decades of the gallery’s existence through the Great Depression, war and earthquakes.

GRASSROOTS SPORT

Experience Fall delays athlete’s plans crucial for Hornby BY KYLE KNOWLES

BY KYLE KNOWLES

One of Canterbury’s brightest athletics stars faces a race against the clock to be fit for the national championships after a nasty fall last week. Canterbury representative Alex Mander was competing in the junior decathlon at the national Combined Events Championship in Hamilton and during the pole vault it all went horribly wrong. His run up and take off did not go quite to plan which left him suspended 4m above the ground. “I didn’t take off quite right and I got to the top of the jump but then fell into the box. I usually slide down the pole but I didn’t want to damage my ankles”. He managed to get half his body back down on to the mattress but slipped off and fell on to the hard concrete injuring his tailbone. He went for an MRI scan last week to discover the extent of the damage with the worst outcome being a fracture. This has put him in doubt for the national athletic championships to be held over March 6-8 in Wellington. “I’m still looking at the nationals but it will be disappointing if I don’t make it,” he said. He was on course to win the decathlon before the fall which also ruled him out of the Canter-

to blood the young talent while they were still around the training ground. “Once you hit 17, 18 you are deemed good enough to train with the premiers. At training we have old guys mixed up with young guys in four groups training together before they go and join their relevant teams. “The idea is that should the prems need a player the reserves have the right fitness and if the call comes, an 18-year-old can go up and they understand the game plans and they are in the right frame of mind to move up.” This year is also special for Hornby as the club is celebrating its centenary. Celebrations are going to take place over Easter weekend. The centenary will start with Hornby playing rivals Halswell at Leslie Park on Good Friday. Hornby have recreated the first playing jersey worn by a Hornby team back in 1915 which will be worn on the day.

Planning for the future is vital to the Hornby Panthers’ success in 2015. The senior side could potentially lose a number of senior players and club president Brent Tomlinson said that is experience you can not replace so they are preparing for this now. “We sat down in the off season with Brent Stuart (senior coach) and tried to work out why we have had good teams. We are looking at probably half a dozen senior guys retiring and we can’t lose that experience.” With pre-season training well under way Hornby have made sure the younger players in the club train with the senior side and learn as much as they can from the experienced players before they finish playing. With the likes of former Warriors player Corey Lawrie and Canterbury Bulls player Jonny Limmer still playing, Tomlinson said it was a perfect opportunity

He said his major goals are to reach the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2020 Olympics. Pole vault is a discipline which has seen increased participation recently with numbers jumping from single digits to double figures at the Papanui Toc-H Club which Mander competes for. He set up a Givealittle page to raise funds for new poles to be bought from the United States. The page has raised more than $1300 and new poles have been ordered so Mander can train with high-quality equipment.

bury championships held over the weekend. In spite of the injury he soldiered on and managed to finish second but was in a great position to win the junior decathlon before the fall. He missed out on gold to Wanganui’s Max Attwell by 181 points. The pole vault was his specialist event and was confident heading into the meet after unofficially breaking the Canterbury age-grade record recently posting vault of 4.4m. He could only mange 2.8m with his injury however. Before the fall, he was on fire posting personal bests in the long jump, shot put, 400m, 110m hurdles and the discus. The injury comes at a bad time of the season but Mander said he still has big goals for the future.

UNLUCKY: Alex Mander competing in the junior decathlon at the national combined event championship last week. In his specialist event, the pole vault, he took a nasty fall ruining his chances of winning gold.

Edith Piaf, Shirley Bassey, Peggy Lee, Dusty Springfield with a bit of Madonna thrown in for good measure - these and other stunning singing stars come alive in Christchurch performer Ali Harper’s new show “Legendary Divas”. It’s a project the talented performer has been inspired to write over the past couple months since she began appearing overseas as a guest entertainer on cruise ships and while in America late last year. Harper was invited to perform at the renowned New York City United Solo festival in late 2014. She took the one woman play “Bombshells” (in association with The Court Theatre), to the Big Apple for which she received the festival’s “Best Actress” award. Musical Director, Richard Marrett returns to work with Ali Harper and her 8 piece band, which includes Michael Story, Tim Sellars, Maddy Addis, Gwyn Reynolds, Cameron Pearce and Scott Taitoko. Legendary Divas takes place at The Court Theatre on Sunday 1st March with two performances - 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Bookings phone 0800 333 100 and for more information go go www.aliharper.com.
